Homework this week
If you're still lying awake at night bothered by "A Jury of her Peers" I encourage you to go read my response to Tyler's post. And to read Letter From a Birmingham Jail. It isn't long and it's very easy to read, but well worth your time.
I am extremely impressed with how you all have wrestled with this short story. It is really fun to teach students who are engaged in what we're studying. I really believe that through literature we learn, not just what to think, but HOW to think. It is important to ask the right questions as we study stories so that we can then ask the right questions about how to live.
This week
POETRY
- 500 word research paper, using MLA format. If you have questions about this check out the purdue owl website. I will consider all sources that you do not cite as plagiarism. Naturally you cannot cite wikapedia. (500 words is only 2 or 3 pages double spaced- you can do it.)
-type 12pt Times New Roman, double spaced
Here is what your research paper should include
- who are they?
- what are their most significant works and why are they significant?
- what worldview and/or schools of thought influenced their writing? (hint:romanticism, modernism etc)
Prepare a ten minute presentation on this poet which will INCLUDE a poem that you recite. Please pick a poem with a minimum of 12 lines.
I will grade on what information you have and how you present it. Eye contact and posture is important and will be factored into your grade. Please practice in front of your mom, dog or mirror.
Let me know if you have any questions! this is worth a significant portion of your grade this semester.
BLOG THIS WEEK
-Blog on one poem by your poet that you are NOT memorizing. Ex: If I was memorizing The Hollow Men by T. S. Elliot, I would post a blog on The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock.
Please post the poem at the beginning of your blog and write a paragraph analysis of the poem. What does it mean? What does the author use to create meaning? (ex: word choice, metaphor, simile, irony etc)
If you do this assignment well it will truly bring the poetry to life. If you need inspiration, google "Poetry explication".
Comment- on someone's poem. Do you agree with their analysis? why or why not?
