The Adventure of the Speckled Band
The author of this story used many things to create suspense. First, he brings Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson into the picture. These men seem to be likable characters especially because they are helping this helpless lady. Next, the author uses suspense as i said with this "helpless" women in desperate need of help. By reading this story you can truly understand the state she is in by the way the author describes her. He says, " She raised her veil as she spoke, and we could see that she was indeed in a pitiable state of agitation, her face all drawn and gray, with restless, frightened eyes, like those of some hunted animal. Her features and figure were those of a woman of thirty, but her hair was shot with premature gray, and her expression was weary and haggard." Automatically there is a draw to all of these characters and the state they are in. Uncertainty is played throughout this whole story. There is a sense of mystery and investigation to see and ask yourself, "whats going to happen next!" What really had me on the edge of my seat throughout this story is the way the author wrote and emphasized his work. This was mostly seen in his "change of point of view". He did this through the whole story from Watson, to Holmes, and even to Miss. Hudson. For example he states, "'My God!' I whispered; 'did you see it?' Holmes was for the moment as startled as I. His hand closed like a vise upon my wrist in his agitation. Then he broke into a low laugh and put his lips to my ear".Overall this story was very suspenseful in many ways as stated and was very enjoyable to read.
