"The Suspense is Killing Me!!!!"

This was an interesting assignment and I found four different ways the author creates suspense.  The devices I uncovered are Chekhov's gun, frame story, twist ending, and flashback.  Chekhov's gun is utilized when Sherlock discovers the ventilator and the bell. No one suspects that the man in the next room could be using both the bell string and the small space in the opening of the ventilator to sneak his weapon through. The use of Frame story creates suspense in the beginning when Watson talks about Sherlock only taking fascinating cases. Once Watson states this the reader knows this next case Sherlock will take on will be intriguing. Arthur Conan Doyle uses Twist ending and Flashback in many of his stories. Twist ending catches the reader off guard by allowing Sherlock to solve the case with a theory that no one else could have thought of. The author uses Flashback by having Sherlock refer to things that occurred earlier in the story, like the whistle that the villain blew to signal the snake to come back to his room. Sir Arthur uses many devices to create suspense.

  1. You're right. The bellpull and the ventilator was a great example of Chekhov's gun! I missed that one. Also, I was glad to see that you thought it was a frame story when Watson described Sherlock's cases. I thought it was, but I was a little unsure of what a frame story was.
