Suspense

First off, I would like to establish that I absolutely love Sherlock Holmes, and I am so very glad that we used this story. Secondly, I would like to discuss a few of the plot devices that the author uses to create suspense. One of the first plot devices that I recognized, was in the Genesis. Ms. Stoner travels to the house of Sherlock Holmes seeking help. She then tells him that it wasn't the cold that made her shiver, "It is fear Mr. Holmes. It is terror." It is my belief that this is foreshadowing. The next plot device that I noticed was Checkhov's gun, which was used each time a clue was found. Another way the author created suspense was helplessness. When Holmes and Watson spent the night in the room that Ms. Stoner was supposed to stay in, they hear hissing and they are helpless. This created suspense. The last plot device that I want to go over is twist ending. When Dr. Roylott dies, it is "an unexpected conclusion to a story."

  1. I really liked your opening for the post, Abbie. I also think you did a great job finding so many plot devices especially Checkhov's gun.
