Suspense: a state or condition of mental uncertainty or excitement, as in awaiting a decision or outcome, usually accompanied by a degree of apprehension or anxiety. The Speckled Band uses suspense to the T in this investigation. The most commonly used way the author created suspense within the story, that I found, was through foreshadowing. In the midst of a story, poem, movie, or whatever the case, foreshadowing seems so subtle...until the end. Then, all the things previously stated come flooding back into one's mind. This occurrence definitely happened to me after reading The Speckled Band. My favorite foreshadow in this story was when Holmes was discovering interesting things in the room: a saucer of milk way too small for a cheetah, a small dog [leash] "curled and tied to make a loop of whipcord", a bed that was fastened to the floor, and lastly, a bell rope that was of no use. Why would those "useless" things be place in the room? They had a crazy detailed meaning only Sherlock Holmes would notice. I guess you'll have to read it to find out...
Great job Perrin! In my opinion the last sentence of your blog is in fact a cliffhanger. I find it ironic that you are creating suspense in a paragraph about how an author creates suspense. You definitely get an A+ from me! ;)
