Suspended disbelief
Foreshadowing
Chekhov's gun
Suspended disbelief was executed towards the end of the story when Sherlock claims that the Doctor must have trained the snake with milk. Obviously, no one really trains snakes so I obeyed the notion consistently from that point forward because I had no other explanation.
Foreshadowing-Two things I observed with this in the case of the sister "The speckled band!!" which is a strange statement until we learned it was speckled snake. Then, almost at the conclusion, Sherlock says something that I remembered. He explains all the facets of her (the sister's) curious death and then asks Watson "Does that strike you?" And then ends the paragraph. It's also spaced a little ways away from the other words I'm supposing for emphasis. I recalled this phrase exclusively when the Positivity of a snake came to my attention. I liked the play on words.
Chekhov's gun- The daughter states several times that her father was from India thus he acquired exotic animals. It was a separate yet still related event pertaining to the story :)
I really enjoyed this assignment. But I have an interesting, Sherlock Holmes related fact. Anyone watch House M.D.? Ever notice parallel's between House and Sherlock Holmes? If so it's because House the television show is a modern adaption of Sherlock Holmes. House, Holmes, James Wilson (House's best friend) John Watson, Yeah. Thought I'd throw that out there because I'm a House fanatic.
I wish I could use milk to train my turtles...that would be awesome. I didn't catch it when I was reading the story, but I could see how the Indian animals were a form of Chekhov's gun. Indian animals were subtly mentioned in the beginning of the story and then boom! This creepy baboon shows up out of nowhere towards the end of the story. Baboons...
ReplyDeleteI liked that part! It completely took me off guard. And Milk could train cats much better I'm confident ;)
DeleteLove your blog! Perfectly described. I watch house also, and I defiantly see the resemblance of the two.
